PPA Super Monday 2013: Creating Dramatic Wedding Portraits

Its spring PPA Super Monday time again! This year our class is entitled Creating Dramatic Wedding Portraits. Honestly , the techniques we will be using, can be used with any portrait type of photography, not just weddings. Seats are limited and going quickly so head on over to PPA’s site to register.

Each of the images below was created using one of the techniques we will be covering to include speed light and video light. Additionally, we will be covering post production (see below).

I truly believe the way I post process my images has played a great role in defining my photographic style. In this class, you will learn the process I use from capture to post which enables me to consistently create dramatic portraits for our clients, regardless of venue, setting, quality of light… or lack there of it.

It all boils down to light. If it’s time to shoot and you have great light… work the hell out of it. But as event photographers we have limited control over when we will have access to our clients. So most of the time wind up shooting in extremely harsh light or the light has long gone. So what to do then?

Speed light: 12×12 quick assemble soft box modifier on flash or unmodified old school bare bulb flash, that’s it. Understand light and the speed light’s limitations and you will create stunning images in extremely harsh conditions.

Video Light: You still need to shoot the bride and groom together and the light has long gone by the time you arrive at the venue for their winter wedding. Doesn’t seem possible… but at times a speed light is too much light and the wrong color temperature. A simple couch with maybe a table light or a wall sconce will create dramatic cinematically lit images with the addition of a video light. We shoot these type of video light shots at every single wedding! We end our albums with them.

Post Production: So we come home and all those dramatic images that we saw on the back of our camera… look kind of ordinary. Believe it or not… that’s a good thing. I will show you how to process images to maximize their impact.

Cescaphe Ballroom Wedding: Stefanie + Mike

It was a Sweet November and so was Stefanie and Mike’s wedding! Stefanie and Mike got ready in the always beautiful, Hyatt at the Bellevue in Philadelphia. After an intimate first look, we stepped outside for the quentisential City Hall Shot and then boarded to party bus to Rittenhouse for some bridal party fun. The nice thing about the Bellevue is that you don’t have to illegally park to get the city hall shot, you literally just walk right out the front doors of the Bellevue! Stefanie and Mike were wed in sweet ceremony in the Ceschape Ballroom. Later that evening, their guests were treated to an out-of-this world cocktail hour and reception for which the Cespcaphe Ballroom is famous! We had a wonderful time getting to know you, Stefanie & Mike. Congratulations again!

Franklin Institute Wedding Philadelphia PA: Beverley + Eric

Beverley and Eric’s The Franklin Institute wedding was amazing! Just sayin One of the great things about being located in the Philadelphia area is the unique and historic places we are afforded the opportunity to capture. Beverley & Eric’s Franklin Institute wedding was such an elegant event in an incredibly awe-inspiring venue. The bride & groom both got ready at the Four Seasons, which allowed them to have an intimate first meeting in a private suite overlooking Logan Square. After Beverley & Eric’s first meeting, we boarded the trolley and went to JFK Plaza to create some wonderful images in front of the iconic Love sculpture. Although Philly is very much a city, there are these cool little side streets where you can shoot to get a little different flavor. Behind the Franklin Institute we found such a gem. A short tree-lined street with beautiful brownstone homes became the perfect backdrop for our couple to create some great images quickly. Seeing the Franklin Institute all dressed up for a wedding is really breathtaking. The 20′ foot statue of Ben Franklin sitting atop a 92 ton pedestal below the 82′ domed ceiling modeled after the Pantheon in Rome lit with deep hues of blue and purple is about as elegant as it gets. Both Beverley and Eric’s families were a pleasure to meet and a joy to work with on the wedding day.

Addison Park Wedding: Corrine & Paul

Corrine and Paul’s Addison Park wedding was super special and they are two of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. Paul is a police officer and volunteer fireman and Corrine is a school teacher. Oh, and did I mention they have the sweetest golden retriever named Cali? Cali was an honorary bridesmaid who popped in for a few photos with Corrine. Paul & Corrine’s First Look was so fun — Paul (White Knight) arrived via fire engine (White Horse) to whisk Corrine away! After a few formals, headed over to Addison Park for a moving ceremony and fun-filled reception. Gorgeous couple, beautiful day!

Loews Hotel Philadelphia Wedding: Slideshow

Wow! Check out Lauren and Mike’s real wedding slideshow from their wonderful Philadelphia wedding. From Old St Mary’s Church to 2nd Bank in Old City, we captured Philly’s old world charm. Then onto Loews hotel where Chico’s Vibe band laid down the perfect soundtrack for an elegant evening. No wedding at the Loews Hotel would be complete with out a trip up to the rooftop to capture an image in front of the PSFS sign that graces the city.

Crystal Tea Room Philadelphia Wedding: Sneak Peek

After getting ready at the Ritz Carlton and married at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul we took a tour of the city creating some wonderful images before heading to the Crystal Tea Room for an outstanding party that was a fitting end to such a special day.
